Baptism is like the first workout in your spiritual life. It can feel uncomfortable, but it is the moment where faith moves from internal belief to visible expression and where real growth begins. It is not just an obligation, but an invitation from Jesus into a deeper and more tangible relationship with Him.
[38] And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit…
[41] So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
More related scripture: Acts 8:12, 8:36-38, 9:17-18, 10:47-48, 16:14-15, 16:31-33, 18:8, 22:16
The Baptism of Jesus
[13] Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. [14] John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” [15] But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. [16] And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; [17] and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
[19] Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
1. Sermon Recap: Pastor Chris talked about communion and baptism as sensory experiences to help us understand what God has done for us. How do you find these sensory experiences help to do that? (Sheila, Tiffani)
2. History/Culture/Language: In the New Testament Church, there is no category for a follower of Jesus who has not been baptized.
If you have been baptized: Jesus’ baptism launched him into ministry. How will you “go out” (Matthew 28.19-20) in ministry next to continue the work of the Gospel started at your baptism?
If you have not been baptized: What is preventing you from taking this step of obedience? (Tina, Martha)
3. Biblical Context: Baptism is a re-enactment of the Gospel (Be buried in the likeness of his death and be raised to newness of life.). If you were explaining baptism to a new believer what Scripture would you use to help them understand this? (Cressy, Rita)
4. Reflection/Application: Pastor Chris said: “Delayed obedience is disobedience.” Is there any way God is calling you to obedience? (Kim, Maria)
